Hotline Radio airs Saturdays from noon to 2pm on WGAW AM 1340, 98.1 FM, and Streaming Live to anywhere in the world.
A recurring guest on Hotline Radio is Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson who has been on hundreds of programs since taking office in 2020. The Mayor updates the audience about issues affecting the City of Gardner and speaks about various community events.
Town Administrators, Town Managers, Coordinators, officials, Councilors, Select Board members, and School Committee members from surrounding communities make frequent appearances. Republican and Democrat politicians come on the program to discuss their views on issues, pending legislation, and just about everything else.

WGAW Radio broadcast live from the Greater Gardner Relay for Life on both June 12th and June 13th.
First up on Hotline Radio: Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson who spoke about the Greater Gardner Relay for Life. “We still work for hope, we still work to fight cancer.”
The Mayor spoke about losing his aunt Claudia to ovarian cancer 2 years ago and about other members of his family who have had cancer. — The Mayor spoke about a previous “Light the Town Purple” event.
Other topics included: The school budget and the rest of the city budget is before the Gardner City Council. Gardner will NOT have an override this year. — The discussion shifted to the MA State budget and funding for Chapter 90 and Chapter 70. —- The Mayor is not in favor of getting rid of Prop 2 ½. — the Mayor spoke about his campaign kickoff which he says was largely successful and he was “blown away and humbled for the amount of support we received.”
The WGAW Hotline Radio show continued with a recap of the opening ceremonies of the Greater Gardner Relay for Life in the remainder of the first hour and the closing ceremonies in the 2nd hour of the show.
The 33rd Greater Gardner Relay for Life was held on June 12 and 13, 2026 at Mount Wachusett Community College. The event serves as a fundraising and awareness movement that honors cancer survivors and caregivers while remembering those lost to the disease.
The proceedings included military color guards, patriotic performances, and speeches from local dignitaries and organizers who highlighted the millions of dollars raised for research since 1994.
A central feature of the ceremony was the Survivor Lap of Hope, where participants used colored crayons to signify their years of survivorship. Also significant: the roles of various volunteer leadership teams and the symbolic lighting of a torch to represent the ongoing fight for a cure. Musical tributes and a parade of rounded out the opening festivities, emphasizing a shared mission of hope and solidarity.
It was announced at the closing ceremonies that over $136k had been raised so far towards the $170k goal, less than $34k to go.

This is based on an Inspector General’s report. Wendell spoke of the ballot question approved by 74% of the voters regarding a state audit.

Interview with Marcia Sharkey – Greater Gardner Relay for Life. Sharp outlined all of the activities slated to occur beginning Friday June 12th at 6pm and continuing overnight through Saturday June 13th.
There are almost 70 teams who are raising money for the American Cancer Society. Goal is to fund the cure for cancer and save lives.

Mayor Nicholson – Chapter 70 and 90 Funding. Senate voted on budget this week. Numbers were higher than those of the House. Conference Committee will need to iron out. — There are challenges in the School Budget – was approved uanimously by the School Committee and was part of the budget the Mayor submitted to the City Council this past week. “We are not going for a Proposition 2 ½ override.” —- A discussion of there being no fireworks at the PACC this year…Wendell asked the Mayor if the City has any plans for fireworks. Mayor said he recently learned that the Kendall Pond Betterment Association would not be having fireworks this year due to the high costs. Culprits are being sought by the FBI and the Gardner PD for a very serious Federal offense and a $20,000 reward is offered. Penalty upon conviction is 10 years in prison, 5 years Probation, $250,000 in fines, and restitution to the radio station. Gardner PD is analyzing forensic evidence found at the site.

First up- Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson: Big things happening with City Government: “We’re pretty deep in the budget process” – Expenses have gone up substantially. The Mayor mentioned health care costs and busing costs. The City has used smart budget processes to stave off financial pressures. — Mayor Nicholson explained that Gardner is currently self-insured, but is looking at every option including some sort of group consortium.
Gardner is lucky that the majority of projects are funded by grant funding – 3rd Party grantwriter has brought in more than $50 million at this point — About 40 grants are in the pipeline at this point — Status of Potholes in Gardner, report a pothole through the pothole portal. — March 29th is Vietnam Veterans Day at the Gardner Fish and Gun Club on Clark Street.

First up on Hotline Radio: Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson – Ready for a storm if it occurs. With a cautious “Vision for the Future”, the Mayor went over the budget process for the listeners starting with the initial requests from Department Heads and using conservative estimates for anticipated revenue. The School Budget will have a budget hearing. With respect to the municipal budget, various standing committees of the Gardner City Council will hold meetings regarding specific departments. Total: General fund: 83 million, enterprise 10 million. “This is going to be a rough budget year for us in the City.” Health insurance costs have skyrocketed with almost a total of a 50% increase in a 2 year period. “This will definitely be a tight year for us in Gardner.” Gardner no longer covers the weight loss drugs because as the Mayor put it, “We couldn’t afford it.” Gardner is self-insured and contracts with Blue-Cross Blue Shield.
Mayor Nicholson went over the accessory dwelling unit and tiny home options in Gardner MA. State allows up to 900 square feet, Gardner allows up to 1350 square feet. On the state website, there is a feature for homeowners to get a free feasibility study regarding what adu would fit on their property.
Mayor Nicholson discusses the red tape which has been in place for decades which has stunted housing growth. — Gardner’s investment in water and sewer infrastructure is enabling the City to keep up with future growth. —- Discussion of Spring projects was discussed including finishing Maki Park, Waterford Community Center, work continuing on the Rear Main Street Project, and the status of potholes. The Banana Incident
Steve Wendell spoke of an incident at Price Chopper this week in which 2 punk kids threw a banana at a lady. Wendell responded by throwing the banana back at the punks. The punks threatened Wendell and did some name-calling. There was almost a fight, but another veteran held Wendell back. Wendell stated that he will always stand up for people if they are attacked.

The Budget Process in the City of Gardner: Funds from the State in 2026 — Gardner is still “early on” in the budget process which started in January. “This is going to be a rough budget year for the City”. Health insurance, school busing, costs for special education students are costs rising exponentially. “This isn’t going to be a smooth sailing year for the City.” Gardner went 6 or 7 years without a health insurance increase and now claims are coming in high. Note: Gardner is self-insured but claims are serviced through Blue-Cross Blue Shield. Once the budget is submitted to the City Council, various meetings are held with sub-committees. Fiscal year begins on July 1st.

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson reviewed the great work of the Department of Public Works this winter keeping the roads open. The Mayor noted that parking meter fees were waived while the snow had them buried. Host Steve Wendell and the Mayor discussed the amount of snow received in the last storm and the clearing of snow which made it easier for this storm. “They did a great job at it.” — Extra snow goes to a City-owned gravel bank which is near the Templeton line. City salt shed is filled up, “We are blessed to have come up with that idea when we did.” “We’re spending more on salt this year than any time in the past 20 years.” The Mayor spoke on the budget process for snow removal and plowing. Usually budget is set lower and the deficit is made up with free cash later in the year. — Wendell asked about the move to Waterford with the Mayor stating; “I’m very happy with the work.” A lot of work is happening behind the scenes including a new fire alarm system. A sprinkler system is planned over the next couple of years.
Helen Mae Sauter School is in the process of a sale right now with a closing anticipated soon. The former Garbose property is also in the process of a sale right now with the plans for new commercial development. — Other projects await the end of the winter. —- Grants: “We’re always looking for grants…lucky if we get 5 of the 40 we applied for.”
The Budget was discussed. As far as the schools, there are 35 less students this year than last. State aid is $15,000 per student. —- Impact of AI is being discussed. — AI is helpful with zoning issues and building permit applicants. The Mayor wished Team USA and the Patriots good luck.

First up on the show: Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson spoke about the DPW’s effort in keeping the roads clear during the last storm. DPW worked 42 hours straight. Nicholson stated: “We’re really lucky to have the crews that we have here.” —- The Mayor confirmed that DPW Director Dane Arnold has reached out to other communities who are short of salt. —- Mayor Nicholson explained that the boilers at City Hall had malfunctions, were fixed, the Gardner Fire Department ventilated the building, and City Hall was open again on Thursday. — There was a discussion about the fire at 123 Grow Daycare which burned down this week. —- Initial results have come back from the state regarding the Sludge Landfill – Mayor will be able to discuss in a month to a month and a half or so — Initial Local Aid numbers show an increase, but that has not yet been finalized. There is a collection bin at Gardner City Hall to collect supplies for those who are homeless – distribution occurs weekly.

One change is that items will be reviewed twice at the Sub-committee level before going to the full Council. — Transparency – Sub-committee assignments – The meetings are moving towards regular monthly meetings rather than ad-hoc meetings — Tyros discussed the success of the Appointments Committee and the Economic Development Committee. — Tyros discussed the impact of the State budget on City Finances and the responsibility of the Council to exercise due diligence. — Tyros stated that he wants more Council information on the City website

Mike Urban: A Commentary on Daycare Problem Fraud in Massachusetts. Urban is very critical of many of the journalists who won’t report on the fraud which is occurring. Urban states many day cares are gaming the system by pretending to be something they are not. In some cases, payments are made, but no children actually attended. Government programs are “robbing people to pay Paul.” People just on the cusp of making it are getting screwed due to some daycares being subsidized.

Urban notes that the Democrats have drifted far into Progressive territory and are living in an echo chamber so far from where they actually stand on the issues. — Steve Wendell speaks about the misuse of SNAP benefits and questioned why the legislature is blocking an audit. 15 percent of the Massachusetts population gets SNAP benefits,but the poverty rate in MA is only 10 percent. Wendell speaks about the illegal pot coming in to Massachusetts from farms in Maine owned by the Chinese. Wendell states that a lot of corruption is going on in Massachusetts. Wendell reminds everyone to feed the birds.

Gardner Mayor Michael Nicholson who affirmed that he is happy being Mayor and is not running for other offices including Lieutenant Governor (more made-up Facebook posts) Host Steve Wendell asked the Mayor about singing and Nicholson said he started back in High School when he was invited to join the choir. The Mayor subsequently was part of the Men’s Chorus at Umass Amherst. The Caroling with the Mayor event is coming up on December 22nd with FREE Horse-drawn carriage rides. As the Mayor put it, “a cheap date.”
